We're Back: Practicing for Spring Matches

Updated: May 24

That Valks are back! And if you're like me, you are excited to get back on the pitch-- or excited to try the sport for the first time. Here's what you need to know.

Practices: Practices are. Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM at Harrison Park at 1401 S Todd Street.

Gear: Dress for the weather. If you have rugby gear, wear it. If not, just dress comfortably in clothing without zippers or other metal that you don’t mind getting dirty and possibly damaged. We recommend cleats, but they are not mandatory. Ruggers are REQUIRED to wear a mouthpiece.

Covid: Please bring plenty of water, in your own personal container, as we cannot provide team water due to COVID restrictions. Under current guidelines, masks are not required nor mandatory. You are welcome to wear one if you so desire, or go without, as you see fit.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Uh, what is rugby? Only the greatest game on the planet-- or so we think. Teams can carry, pass (backward) or kick the ball down the pitch to the opponents’ goal line to score. The team scoring the most points in the given time of play wins the match.

I've never played rugby, can I still come out? Yes. We welcome all ruggers regardless of experience level. Make sure you bring a mouthpiece.

I've heard rugby described as 'football without pads' - is this accurate? Football is a sport that originated from the game of rugby, but it a much different game. Rugby is a very controlled game with a lot of rules in place to keep all players safe on the field. Although rugby players do not wear pads and protection, they are taught the necessary skills to stay safe and successful on the field.
